Duffy Daugherty

Bio

Known for his keen wit, unfailing good humor and wisdom, as well as his 109-69-5 career record, Duffy Daugherty was Michigan State's head coach for 19 years, the longest term in the history of Spartan football. Born in Emeigh, Pennsylvania it was at Syracuse University that he got his first taste of collegiate football. Daugherty played three seasons in the Orange line, and captained the team in 1939. He was a graduate assistant coach at Syracuse in 1940. He served in the Army in World War II, rising from the rank of private to major. In 1945, he coached Trinity High School in New York City. He then served as assistant coach at Syracuse two years and assistant at Michigan State six years. He became Michigan State head coach in 1954 and served 19 years. His 1965 team had a 10-0 regular season and was named national champion. His 1966 team had a 9-0-1 regular season, including a 10-10 tie with Notre Dame, named "the Game of the Decade." He was named Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association in 1955 and by the Football Writers Association in 1965.
