Frank Juhan

Bio

He was a champion in two careers. First he was Frank Juhan, all- around athlete and prize scholar at the University of the South (Sewanee). Then he was the Rt. Rev. Juhan, Episcopal bishop. At Sewanee, he was a center on offense and first player in the South to play roving linebacker on defense. He was on the baseball team, track team (Southern Intercollegiate mile champion), and boxing team (Southern Intercollegiate champion). While a student he boxed an exhibition with Bob Fitzsimmons, former world heavyweight champion. In his football years 1908-10 Sewanee went 18-4-3 with victories over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Alabama, Vanderbilt and Louisiana State. One of the losses was to Princeton, an Eastern power. Juhan obtained his degree in theology and was ordained in 1912. He served as chaplain, West Texas Military Academy 1912-13; chaplain Sewanee Academy 1913-16; rector Christ Church, Greenville, South Carolina, 1916-24. On November 24, 1924, he was consecrated Episcopal Bishop of Florida, a post he held until Dec. 31, 1956. He received honorary doctor of divinity degrees from Sewanee 1925 and Washington & Lee 1949 and doctor of laws from Rollins 1950.
