Bio
Thomas Everett set a standard that all future defensive backs must match as the first ever winner of the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. Not only was he adept at coverage and as a tackler, but also was a fine punt returner. Everett came to Baylor University from Daingerfield (TX) High School. With the Tigers he played seven positions including quarterback. As a Baylor freshman, Everett became a starter at cornerback halfway through the season. He opened the next year at corner but was moved to safety in his second game. There he blossomed making 99 tackles and making the most dramatic play of the season against Texas. A 46-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed an upset win over the Longhorns. In his junior year, he blossomed into one of the best safeties in the nation earning first-team All-America honors and taking the first of two consecutive SWC defensive player of the year honors. That year the Bear defense was the third toughest in the nation against the pass. In his Thorpe winning senior year, he became a unanimous All-America as Baylor boasted the nation's number three defensive unit. Everett was drafted in the fourth round by Pittsburgh and enjoyed a nine-year NFL career appearing in one Pro Bowl and two Super Bowls. In Super Bowl XXVII he had two interceptions. After football, Everett began a career working with young athletes.
