Flag Day
Friday, June 14th is Flag Day, so it's fitting to discuss the first penalty flag that was created by Youngstown State Coach Dike Beede and his wife. Coach Beede asked his wife to make the red and white flag out of an old Halloween costume and bed sheet. She sewed fishing weights into each corner so it would not blow away when thrown. The flag was first used in a match between Youngstown State and Oklahoma City in 1941, however, it was not used by every team until 1948.
