New to the Archives: Kansas 'Blackhawks' Football Uniform

These sharp-looking uniforms were worn by the Kansas Jayhawks in their September 13, 2024, game against UNLV. Originally debuted in 2023 during games against Illinois and Kansas State, these black uniforms feature several meaningful details. "KANSAS" is spelled out in the circus font traditionally associated with KU basketball. The red “K” on the back neckline symbolizes the “Gameday K Flag,” which is raised before each game in the north end zone of Memorial Stadium in Lawrence by a former Jayhawk student-athlete.

The most eye-catching detail is the 1941 “Warhawk,” or “Angry Jayhawk,” logo found on the helmet and jersey sleeves. This logo represented the Jayhawks until 1946 when the “Smiling Jayhawk” was created by Hal Sandy.

Special thanks to Darren Hain, KU’s Associate Director and Head Football Equipment Manager, for donating these unique uniforms to the Hall of Fame. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!
