Roger Staubach

Bio

The Artful Dodger, was a character from the Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist". In football, he was a lanky master of elusion at Navy during the early 1960s. Roger "The Dodger" Staubach, who began his career at Cincinnati's Purcell High, was a quarterback of unmatched talents, equally adept as a runner or passer. Enemy defenses simply never knew what Staubach would do with the ball - a cat-and-mouse game which confounded his opponents throughout his brilliant collegiate and professional careers. During three varsity seasons, Staubach completed 292 of 463 pass attempts. And of those 463 throws, only 19 were intercepted. Staubach's finest season came in 1963, his junior year, when he led the Midshipmen to a 9-1-0 record before losing to Texas, 28-7, in the Cotton Bowl. Staubach was heralded as college football's premier player, receiving both the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award along with unanimous All America acclaim. When his playing days had ended at Navy, the school's record book had 28 new entries recording his amazing accomplishments. Following graduation, Staubach served his country in Vietnam. After his Navy duties ended, he joined the Dallas Cowboys and led them to four NFC titles and two Super Bowl victories.
