Bio

Stan Jones played offensive and defensive tackle for Maryland and was a unanimous All-America in 1953. Maryland posted a 10-0 record in 1951 and was ranked third in the nation. The Terps were 7-2 in 1952 and ranked 13th. In 1953, they were 10-1 and national champions. Jones, playing under coach Jim Tatum, was at Maryland when it was a big winner in different leagues. The Terps were co-champions with Virginia Military Institute in 1951 in the Southern Conference. In 1953 they played in the Atlantic Coast Conference and were co-champs with Duke. On the regular season of 1951 Maryland outscored its opponents 353-62. In 1953, the margin was 298-31. In 1953, the school gave Jones the Anthony Nardo Award as the team's best lineman. Honors were heaped on Jones after his playing days ended. In 1977, he made the Atlantic Coast Conference 25-year team. A native of Lemoyne, PA., he was named to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Then he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His pro playing days covered 13 years 1954-66 with the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins. He served as assistant coach with Denver and Buffalo 1967-77.
