Ashford led the Vikings to unanimous national acclaim as the No. 1 small college team in the country in 1949. He was named Little All-America Coach of the Year in 1950 and twice received the NAIA Award of Merit. In 1958, he was named NAIA Coach of the Year, and his overall record ranked him in the top ten of all-time college coaches. In 1967, Ashford retired from coaching, and served as director of athletics and professor of physical education until 1971. A member of numerous other Halls of Fame, Ashford passed away in 1973.
