The desert landscape of the Western Athletic Conference was never beneficial for college football players when seeking proper recognition within the game's overall scene. Playing late night games away from the view of national television, or after eastern newspaper deadlines have been reached, has never helped these players gain national exposure. Arizona State Sun Devil wide receiver John Jefferson overcame these obstacles to become a 1977 consensus All-America. JJ first burst on the national scene two years earlier when one catch awakened even the sleeping writers on the east coast. Trailing Arizona late in the first half, Jefferson flung his body flat out toward a pass and, completely horizontal reeled it in for a score. Forever known simply as "The Catch," the touchdown helped rally ASU as they preserved an undefeated season and went on to a victory over Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl and a number two national ranking as the nation's only undefeated team. While playing for Coach Frank Kush, Jefferson was not only spectacular, he was consistently spectacular, as he set an NCAA mark by catching passes in 42 consecutive games. Over his career he had 188 receptions for 2,993 yards and 19 touchdowns. John was twice named as the Sun Devil Most Valuable Player, an honor he also won in the Hula Bowl. The San Diego Chargers selected Jefferson as the fourth player taken in the NFL draft. In an eight season career he was elected to four Pro Bowls.
