Bob McWhorter

Bio

Bob McWhorter was a star athlete at Gordon Military School. In the spring of 1910, the academy baseball team walloped the University of Georgia baseball team 11-0. After the game the university hired the Gordon coach, W. Alex Cunningham. He was Georgia's football and baseball coach, and he brought with him many of the athletes from the academy. Being only a junior at Gordon, McWhorter had to take a special exam to qualify for college. He passed the exam with high grades, and at Georgia he was Phi Beta Kappa. He played halfback for Georgia from 1910-1913, and scored 61 touchdowns. He was all-Southern four times and made the Parke Davis All-America selection in 1913. McWhorter stood 5 feet 10 and weighed 180-pounds. He captained the football and baseball teams his senior year. He turned down a professional baseball contract and entered law school at the University of Virginia. McWhorter began practicing law in Athens. He was a professor in law school at Georgia 1923-1958 and served as president of the Bulldog Club, the booster group for Georgia teams. McWhorter was elected to four terms as mayor of Athens, 1940-47. He was one of five brothers who played baseball for Georgia.
